DC Broomball North Starts February 24
Game Day: Friday
Game Times: 9:00PM
Rink Location: Rockville Ice Arena
Broomball is a popular recreational game played on ice. Players wear special rubber-soled shoes instead of skates, and the ice is prepared in such a way that it is smooth and dry to improve traction.
Originating in Canada and played around the world, broomball is played on a hockey rink, either indoors or outdoors, depending on climate and location.
In a game of broomball there are two teams, each consisting of six players: a goaltender and five others. Players hit a small ball around the ice with a stick called a "broom." The broom may have a wooden or aluminum shaft and has a rubber-molded triangular head similar in shape to that of a regular broom.
The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. Goals are scored by hitting the ball into your opponent's net using your broom. Tactics and plays are similar to those in ice hockey.
Broomball does not require expensive equipment or special skills - just an open mind and a positive attitude!
LEAGUE GAMES
DC Broomball runs two full-ice, competitive leagues based out of Tucker Road Ice Rink and Rockville Ice Arena.
League play runs from September to May and is broken down into three, eight game
seasons (fall, winter, and spring). Each season consists of six regular season games and two
playoff games.
League games are played with two referees and all USA Broomball rules and DC Broomball house rules are in effect. All league games are played on a full sheet of clean ice with BROOMBALL (8X6) NETS.
DC Broomball league sticks and shoes are available for players who need to borrow them on
a first-come, first-serve basis.
Each season, the team who finishes in first place in its league gets its name, and the names of its
players, engraved on that league's championship cup, which is awarded at the official end of
season party.
Registration is currently open for the WINTER 2011 SEASON of DC Broomball. Registration is
$100 per player and available by clicking HERE.
PICK-UP GAMES
DC Broomball also offers pick-up games on select Saturdays at Kettler Capitals Iceplex
for new players, individuals looking to try broomball for the first time and veteran league
players looking for extra ice time.
Pick-up games cost $10 and are played on a clean sheet of ice. There are no referees, and
the games are played at a more laid-back and relaxed pace.

BASIC RULES
DC Broomball is a NO CHECKING LEAGUE! Should a player check another player or otherwise act in such a way that could be considered detrimental to the health of other players, they will be issued a two-minute roughing penalty for the first offense, and given a game misconduct and ejected for a subsequent offense.
• Should a player attempt to start a fight, or should two players engage in a fight, they will be ejected for the current game and given a one game suspension. Should the behavior persist, a player will be banned from league competition indefinitely.
• Each game consists of two 18-minute, stop-time halves.
• DC Broomball utilizes the "floating blue line" concept. That is, once an attacking player has crossed the blue line in the offensive zone, the red line now becomes the designated offsides line.
• Icing occurs when any player of a defending team shoots or intentionally deflects the ball from behind their defending zone blue line and across the goal line of the opposing team. Icing is ruled automatically and only if the ball is unplayable by either team and if the goalie is in or headed back to the crease. Icing occurs at all times in the game, including during power plays.
• At all times, at least one female player from each team must be on the ice. If a team has less than one woman on the ice they will be assessed a too many men on the ice bench minor that can be served by any player on the ice when the whistle blew, asselected by the captain. If a female player is sent to the penalty box, she counts as the female on the ice.
• Only the designated captain and assistant captains from each team may converse or discuss calls with the referees.
• Should a game end in a tie after two periods of playing time then there will bea 5 minute, 4-on-4 (3 men and 1 woman), stop time, sudden-death overtime period WITH NO GOALIES. If neither team scores, the game will end in a tie.
• During the playoffs, should a game ends in a tie at the end of regulation, there will be a 5 minute, 4-on-4 (3 men and 1 woman), stop time, sudden-death overtime period WITH GOALIES. Should the overtime period end in a tie, an additional 5 minute, sudden-death overtime period WITH NO GOALIES will be held. Should that overtime period end in a tie, a shootout will be conducted to determine a winner.
• Each team receives one timeout per period (including overtime, if necessary).Timeouts do NOT carry over into the subsequent periods if unused.
• A hand pass is called when a player bats the ball with his hand and it is touched by their teammate in the neutral or offensive zone. This results in a stoppage of play. Should the ball be intercepted by an opposing player or touched first by the player who batted it with their hand before the pass is completed, the infraction is waved off and play continues.
